One flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a book by the American author Ken Kesey (1935-2001). Kesey was inspired to write this novel from his experiences working as a night attendant in the psychiatric ward of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Menlo Park, New Jersey. One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest became one of the most acclaimed novels in 20th century America. All through the book, there is an on-going theme which is the influence and power of authority. Kesey, in my opinion is trying to illustrate, through the characters in his novel, the power that our society has upon us. Nurse Ratched is a very good example of the effects authority can have over others and so is McMurphy, who is in an on-going power struggle with nurse Ratched.
Firstly, nurse Ratched is presented as the most uptight, strict and harsh nurse in the hospital. The moment McMurphy sets foot in the ward; she judges him and labels him as a trouble-maker. Straight away, nurse Ratched lets McMurphy know who is in charge and she lays the rules down for him. Naturally, McMurphy being of the rebellious sort, chooses not to obey the rules but to march to his own drum beat and to take the patients along with him. McMurphy starts by teaching the patients all sorts of card games and he then gets them to gamble away their money or belongings. He also takes them on an unauthorized fishing trip which gets them all in serious trouble. Nurse Ratched has a very hard time trying to tame McMurphy but never succeeds in getting control, so she resorts to sending him to shock-therapy to mess with his brain a bit and to try to calm him down. Basically, nurse Ratched could be interpreted as being society’s “big brother” who watches over everyone and controls everything, and when people are different, they are excluded from society because they do not conform to the set rules and norms.
Another point that I believe is important to analyze, is the authority that McMurphy has over the other patients. At first, McMurphy has a hard time adjusting to life in the ward, but after while, he develops great friendships with the patients and sees that they are not all that different from him, they are simply different form other people in society. Once McMurphy realizes this, he decides to try and get the patients to stand up for themselves and for what they believe in. He wants them to defy authority and to not let themselves be bullied around by nurse Ratched. Near the end of the novel, McMurphy turns the whole ward upside down one night, by letting two prostitutes in and by getting all the patients drunk or high on drugs. He intends to escape before nurse Ratched finds out about all this, but forgets and falls asleep instead. The next morning, when the nurse finds the ward completely destroyed, she is infuriated with McMurphy. She asks one of the patients, Billy Bibbit, if he is proud of what he has done by sleeping with a prostitute. For once, Billy stands up for himself and says that he is proud of his actions and that he does not regret it one bit. Nurse Ratched, however, knows Billy’s weaknesses and threatens to tell his mother what has happened. This puts Billy over the edge, so he commits suicide by cutting his throat. In the end, McMurphy did have somewhat of a good influence over the other patients because they learned to stand up for themselves in certain situations, but at other times, authority had a greater power over them and it lead some of them to a tragic end.
All through his novel, Kesey illustrates the effects that authority can have over us. He illustrates the greater authority as being bad (nurse Ratched) and the underdogs (McMurphy and the patients) as being good. He shows that during the period of time in which the novel is set (late 1950’s), being different meant that you were mentally challenged and you were sent away to a hospital to be cured. In our day and age, we know that being different can have extraordinary effects, I mean, where would we be without Shakespeare’s poems, Picasso’s paintings or even Einstein’s revolutionary theory’s? So even though authority may have some power over us, we must continue to be ourselves no matter what others may say or think.

3 reasons:
-I think the organisation of my presentation was well structured and clear. I understood what needed to be accomplished and I did it in an orderly fashion.
-I don't think I talked as much as I could have, and that is why I lowered my mark to 8/10. I could have developped more on the questions that were asked and given my personal opinions on some of the matters.
-I believe that the use of my vocabulary was good and that my description of the plot was easily understandable. I think that the book was well described and that I completed the task well.

Book Review on One flew over the Cuckoo's nest
Tell how you would react if you were one of the characters in the novel:
One flew over the Cuckoo's nest is a novel written by Ken Kesey that takes place in a mental health facility in Oregon . I chose the subject: "tell how you would react if you were one of the characters in the novel", so that I could explain how I would feel if I were one of the patients in the ward who is faced with some of the situations that the characters in the book are faced with.
The first situation that I would have a reaction to would be the arrival of McMurphy. McMurphy is described as being as strong-headed and disobedient Irishman who has a recent conviction of statutory rape. He has been transferred from a state prison to the mental health facility because he fakes having a mental disability and would rather be institutionalized than live on a “work farm”. His arrival creates a huge turmoil on the ward, because he marches to his own drumbeat and does not follow any of the rules established by the hospital. At first, I think I would have a hard time adjusting to his arrival and would not be happy with him because he would disrupt the order of the institution to which I would be used to. However, after some time, I think I would finally come around and see that he McMurphy is actually a pretty nice guy and I would have fun with him and all his wackiness. I would respect him, in the fact that he is not afraid to say what he thinks and feels and he is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in.
The second situation that I would react to would be the boat ride that McMurphy takes all the patients from the ward on. McMurphy steals the bus with all the patients on it and takes off to the marina. He decides that he wants to teach his friends from the institution how to fish. If I were one of the patients on the so-called field-trip, I would be thinking that it is one of the best days of my life, since at the institution everything is planned and controlled and there is never anything spontaneous that happens. I would be so happy that McMurphy finally took me out to do something fun and exciting and different from anything else that I have ever done.
The third situation to which I would react very strongly would be when Billy Bibbit commits suicide. I think at first I would not understand what has just happened and just be under total shock. Once the event would have sunken in, I would be overcome with sadness and be completely abashed by the tragic event. I would also be very angry with nurse Ratched because she is the one who pushes Billy to breaking point by threatening to tell his mother about his bad behaviour (sleeping with a prostitute brought in by McMurphy). I would then proceed to mourn Billy’s death and try and comfort the other patients in the ward who are affected by the event.
In summary, there are many events that take place in the book that would raise a strong reaction in me, whether it is sadness, joy, panic or even stress. This book takes the reader through a multitude of emotions and feelings and makes him feel like he is really a character in the novel right along side McMurphy and the other patients.

The story ends with a very un-expected twist. The author has us all fooled by thinking that Adelaide and George will live happily ever after, but in fact, when Adelaide goes to take a very much deserved bath, he goes in and pushes her head under the water to drown her.

The Story of an Hour
Part A: Questions
1. Louise Mallard’s opinion of marriage is that it is a sort of powerful will that binds men and women together against their choice. It is in the second sentence of the 12th paragraph that Mrs. Mallard gives her clear opinion of marriage.
3. Louise sees her life as a widow as a great opportunity to live for herself and for no one else. She sees her life beginning instead of ending: “There would be no one to live for during those coming years…”
4. Louise Mallard stops crying because she soon realizes that life as a widow will be grand. She lets whatever is coming for her possess her and realizes she is free: “The vacant stare and the look of terror that had followed it went from her eyes. They stayed keen and bright.”
5. There is a long description of what is outside Louise’s window to illustrate the freedom that she has been missing out on, and will soon get to experience. Outside it is sunny and there is a bright blue sky, and it is the beginning of spring which could be interpreted as the beginning of a new life for her.

Irony is used in English to communicate the opposite of what one actually means. For example someone could say: “I’m not angry!” But in fact they are angry and are simply using irony to depict it. It is basically to say one thing but to mean another.
In The Story of an Hour, the author uses irony to explain how the main character reacts to the death of her husband; and also to explain what happens at the end of the story. Firstly, at the beginning of the story, Louise Mallard learns of the death of her husband. She falls into the arms of her sister Josephine and is absolutely abashed by the news. She then proceeds to go to her room and weep, but it only takes her a short period of time to get over the drama and to realize how happy she actually is about the news. This situation is quite ironic because Mrs. Mallard appears to be very saddened by the news, but then turns around and feels great about it. The author, at the beginning of the story, makes us believe that the death of Mr. Mallard is a very tragic event for his wife, but in fact it is one of the best things that could have happened to her.
Later on in the story, there is another situation depicted that is ironic: Louise Mallard fights with all her might not to let whatever is coming for her possess her, but not long after; she does let it overcome her and she is filled with joy. She pretends that she is not happy about the news and that the loss of her husband has crushed her, but the irony of it, is that it takes her no time at all to be joyful about the situation.
Lastly, at the end of the story, when we all thought that Mr. Mallard was dead, the author surprises us, and we learn that in fact he is still alive and well. He was nowhere near the accident and it was all a huge mistake. Mrs. Mallard cannot take the news and dies from a so-called heart disease. This situation is the most ironic of the story because, the entire time, it revolves around the death of Brently Mallard, but at the end of it all, it is not him who dies, but in fact it is Mrs. Mallard who perishes from the “joy that kills”. The author uses irony to lead the reader in one direction, but at the end uses it to surprise him by changing the idea he had already preconceived. It is a very efficient way to have the reader react to the story and to raise discussions.

1. He was the first well known American writer to try and earn his living through writing alone. This resulted in a financially difficult life.
2. His first book was not published under his name, but as "A Bostonian" .
3. He married his 13 year old cousin when he was 26 years of age.
B. Plot
This story is about a man who is completely obsessed by his master's eye. This eye ressembles one of a vulture, it is pale blue with a white film over it. It consumes him day and night and so he decides to get rid of it by killing his master. This narrator has an accute sense of hearing and can hear almost anything. He is said to be a mad man! So one night, he creeps up to his masters room to try and kill him during his sleep. He has to be extremely quiet to not wake him and to have him suspect absolutely nothing. He does this every night for seven days straight but does not succeed because the old man's eye is closed. But one night, just after midnight, he creeps up to his master's room and sees the eye wide open, staring out into the night. He cannot take it any longer, he must get rid of the retched eye!
The old man's servant stood in silence for many hours. He could hear a light thumping growing louder and louder and even louder still! It was the old man's heart beating faster and louder every minute. He couldn't take it anymore so he burst into the room and smothers him under the bed. The old man let out one shreak, only one, before he was completely silent and immobile. Police arrive at the house after this and demand to inspect the area. The narrator has no problem with this for he has hidden all the evidence well. But it's not until the three police men have inspected and are sitting and having a cup of tea, that the narrator hears the thumping once again. He cannot stand it and revealsto the men what he has done.
C. Analysis
1) Setting: The story takes place in the house of an old man, where the narrator lives. The story probably takes place in the 1840's and over 8 days.
2) Characters: The narrator is the protagonist and is the main character. He is an unnamed person, and calls himself sane but in fact is insane. We don't know if he is a man or a woman but we can make certain assumptions as to what gender he is. (Poe always uses a man protagonist and the actions the narrator does to kill the old man would not be used by a woman.) The other characters are the old man, who has the evil eye. The neighbor hears the sceam and calls the police, and finally the three police men who investigate the house and arrest the narrator.
3) Themes: (Reader interpretation)

I did the vocabulary and spelling pratice 2 at the high school level. I was once again quite interested in learning new words to add to my vocabulary and to see how I compare to most english high school students. I really wanted to see if I would succeed well in this test, so I was quite eager to begin.
2. Difficulty level
I think the difficulty of this test was just right. I found it challenging, but at the same time I did not feel lost and like I was unable to complete it. Some questions were much easier than others, however some were much harder than others so all in all it balaced itself out well.
3. What I learned
I learned some new vocabualry words during the course of this test and I also learned that my vocabulary and spelling skills are quite good and also are at the same level as the average high school student. I am quite happy with my result.

41/50 (82%)

I thought this test was quite difficult and I had a hard time doing it. However, I tried to use my common sense and figure out wich words would be antonyms and wich ones would be synonyms to other words. Although I did not fail this test, I dont think I was fully prepared to do it. I think maybe the middle school vocabulary tests would have been better for me.

Camille
Camille is a student who is in the literature and social sciences program at cegep Saint-Laurent. She is in her second year and hopes to finish her cegep studies two years from now. She also wishes, in the years to come, to travel independantly all over the world. In the short term however, Camille would like to improve on her piano skills and become an all around better player.
This young woman has accomplished many things during the course of her life, but one of the things she is most proud of would be the trekking expedition she did for three weeks in the Gaspésie region of Québec.
Camille also has a wide range of interests such photography. Taking peoples portraits is what she prefers. She also likes to do lots of outdoor activities like running or taking long walks. And obviously, her main interest is reading and writing, hence her choice of school program.
Camille's social network inculdes mostly her friends from elementary school who she is still sees regularly since they go to the same cegep and her two sisters to whom she is very close to.
Her many skills include writing, running or jogging outside and the ability to take wonderful pictures.
All in all, Camille is a very well rounded and accomplishe young woman who is definitely going places!
